Steve Duckworth is Musical Director of the choir, he has been involved with the choir since its formation in 2007. He graduated from Surrey University in 1993 with a degree in Music and Sound Recording and works as a composer and sound designer in the video games industry, working on many high profile games and movie licences.
Sophie Freeman is accompanist for the adult choir. Sophie is also a saxophone & flute player. During the day she teaches at Foremarke, Repton & Abbotsholme School. In the evening she can be found on tour performing with many different musicians ranging from Marc Almond & Right Said Fred to Il Divo and Jack Jones.
Michael Halls is Organist and Director of Music at St Oswald’s Church in Ashbourne. Before that he held a similar position at St Matthew’s Church in Darley Abbey. He was Head Teacher at Turnditch C. E. (Aided) Primary School for 28 years. He is well known for promoting a love of music, especially singing, throughout the Ashbourne area.
Mel Gill gained an honours degree in music with Anglia Polytechnic University at Colchester Institute in 1994, and has been teaching flute and piano since then. Mel has worked for local charity First Taste taking music, memory and movement into Care Homes and Day Centres for the last six years. She is currently a special needs TA.
Josh Short accompanies our youth choir. Josh is year 9 at QEGS and has been playing piano for 7 years and trumpet for the last 2 years. He is an experienced choral singer. Josh’s particular interest lies with Jazz music and he performs regularly with Hot House Jazz and the Bill Bailey Band and has even toured in New Orleans last year.
Linda Perry Smith was the Musical Director and founder of the Ashbourne Singers until 2014 when she left to pursue other musical interests. In September 2007 she formed the Ashbourne Singers to encourage people to sing and discovered a passion for conducting. The Young Ashbourne Singers was formed in 2008. She is thrilled at how it has grown in strength, numbers and reputation.
